totalstressor asked:

I have a 1994 Volvo 850 and I was wondering how I find out if I can substitute a transmission from another volvo from a different year like1993 or 1995?

any auto parts store should be able to tell you if it is possible and what conversions you would need to do

This is possible but the real challenge lies in determining which and what transmission is verifiable in lower mileage to replace an existing problem,so that you do not have premature reocurrence of the same down the line, the years may differ but there may be an interchange ,in the years.

The transmissions are interchangeable from 1993 to 1997 for the Volvo 850, but I recommend you only consider a transmission from a ‘95-’97 since they were improved. Good luck!

Sorry to tell you this but the short answer is probably NOT.

Some of the 1994 is compatible with some 1995 models upwards. But depending on the engine type, transmissions may not even be compatible within the same year if the engine type was different. Read below for more.

Although transmissions for the Volvo 850 remained the same from the year they were first introduced in 1993 up to 1995.
      2 types
      AW50-42 (Automatic)
      M56 (Manual)

There were many incompatible variants. To substitute transmission first check your transmission type, Auto or Manual. Then engine type and year.

      Manual Transmission Exchange units
      Trans # 5003924-7 for engine
      B5252FS
      B5204FT
      B5234FT
      Trans # 5003890-0 for engine B5254FS
      Trans # 5003891-8 for engine B5204FS

      Automatic Transmission (T=Turbo S=norm aspirated)
      Part # 1208776 for
      engine B5234S 1994 only
      engine B5254S 1994 to 1995
      engine B5252S 1994 to 1995
      Part # 1208560
      engine B5234T 1994 to 1995
      Part # 1208774
      engine BB5204S 1994 to 1995

More on 850 transmission history here.

In 1996 M59 transmission was introduced for the B5234T4 Engine (Volvo 850R) Volvo’s quickest car ever and well sought after.

      In its final year, 1997.
The B5254T (Volvo 850, 2.5 litre, 5 cyl turbo) used the M58 transmission for AWD.

Please refer to link below. Person answering that question is a qualified Volvo mechanic.

Also links below to identify engine type and transmission.

      Good luck!
